What is a Metering Unit?

Oil and gas companies need to know how much product they are flowing and are generally required to report gas volumes (in Alberta to the EUB).

A simple metering unit (wet gas metering) measures a well’s natural gas flow rate using a meter run and chart recorder. These are an excellent solution for metering wells that are typically dry with no liquid slugging, where liquids can be removed downstream.

On the other end of the scale, large custody transfer metering & proving skids (click through to this section in Sample Projects) are used to measure the volume of product being transferred from an entire production facility (ie. Oilsands plant) into a transmission line.

Does Petrofield build these large metering skids?

Yes. We have built very large custody transfer metering skids used to measure dilbit/water flow from major oilsands commercial SAGD projects.

One of our current projects involves a metering package designed to heat and measure dilbit/water at a maximum pressure of 2250 kpa (326 psi) and flow rates up to 730 m3/hour through three liquid ultra sonic flow meters. Petrofield has the experience necessary to handle almost any size project.

What if I only need a small metering unit?

For smaller wellsite applications, the most popular metering unit is a vertical style which prevents liquid from collecting on the orifice plate, thus improving metering accuracy and reducing maintenance time and expense. This configuration includes a standard welded steel frame man-door on the cabinet which is more durable and operator-friendly than the piano-hinge type commonly found on horizontal style unit cabinets.

The skid also includes an extension for mounting an optional 500-gallon methanol tank, or even a future separator vessel if the well starts to produce too much liquid.
